Home / News / Arson suspected after train burns

Three carriages of a Cape Town bound train were damaged by fire on Thursday morning at Kuils River Station after allegedly being set alight.

One carriage was completely destroyed and the two adjacent carriages suffered extensive damage in the fire that was reported shortly after 11:00.

According to Metrorail investigations are underway to confirm the circumstances of the incident. It is suspected that the fire was set deliberately.

No injuries were reported and the train service in the areas was restored at 13:00. Some delays may however still be experienced due to final clean-up operations in progress.

Metrorail Regional Manager Lindelo Matya said the destruction of the three carriages brings the total number lost to fire in the last six months to eight. "The loss further reduces our capacity to serve customers on a very busy route."

He condemned the criminal act in the strongest possible terms, calling on the public to expose those responsible. "Our customers suffer the consequences of irresponsible, cowardly acts".

He added that the cost of the damage would only be confirmed post-assessment but would run into several million.
