Home / Review: P.H.Fat new EP, You Are Going to Die

In a daring move, local electro-rap musicians PHFat have released their follow up to 2011’s successful Dinosaur Blood, as a free download.

The album, entitled You Are Going to Die, is the three piece’s most eclectic offering, from the tongue-in-cheek “The Radio” to the more sinister “The Dark”, the album shows that the group is open to experimentation, whilst still retaining their signature rap-orientated electronic music.

The album starts off with “The Radio”, with witty commentary on language filtering on radio shows. The song is solid and manages to find a groove which is somehow old-school hip hop and modern electro at the same time, making it a definite single.

Following the opener, “Kill the Universe” sets a slightly darker yet still playful tone on the album, being more upbeat musically but darker lyrically.

No rap or electronic music album would be complete without at least one vocal-free interlude, and Breakfastloopjam does just that, letting the listener get to listen to the producing talents of the man behind the beats, Nazieg Iseppi, better known as Narch. The track could have been more interesting, but works well as an interlude between the other songs.

1989 has a lighter tone, with vocalists Mike Zietsman and Marc Potgieter (Smooth Mike and Disco Izrael) showing that local vocalists can flow with the best of the international acts. This is even better displayed on the next track “The Dark”, which has a much deeper and more serious tone compared to the rest of the album, making it a the album’s standout track in my opinion.

The final track, “Jump”, is a solid closer to the album, and should do very well live, with many parts at which crowds which are not familiar with the band can join in.

As a whole, You Are Going to Die is a definite step up in songwriting from Dinosaur Blood, stepping away from the now oversaturated dubstep label and embracing a variety of new sounds.
